Tyler Watson of Watson Heating & Air: Building an HVAC Business from the Ground Up
Tyler Watson started learning HVAC work at just 17 years old. His parents owned a restaurant and were paying a lot for repairs, which got him interested. He knew college wasn’t for him, so he went to trade school and got his first job in HVAC.
By the age of 21, Tyler had earned his master license. That was not easy because you need four years of experience just to take the test. He worked hard and did side jobs until he was ready to start his own company.
His wife used to be a school teacher. Now, she runs the office doing payroll and bookkeeping. Tyler said that running the business side was the hardest thing he had to learn.
Tyler learned quickly how important a good accountant is. He said having someone to help explain things like taxes and invoices made a big difference. It was more important than hiring a technician at first.
“I’d rather make less money but make sure our employees are happy.” ~ Tyler Watson
Today, Watson Heating & Air has 15 employees and 10 vans on the road. They serve central Kentucky, including Richmond and Lexington. They handle both residential and commercial HVAC work.
At first, Tyler focused on new construction. Now, they have two divisions: one for residential service and another for larger commercial projects. He says things have grown a lot, especially in their commercial division.
Tyler believes in treating his team well. He lets them take time off when they need it and makes sure they feel respected. This has helped him keep great employees over time.
He also uses a smart hiring method. Instead of only using ads, he gets referrals from his current team. That way, he hires people who already fit in and who others trust.
Tyler wants to grow slowly and the right way. He says it’s important to build systems that can handle more customers and more work. He wants people to hear good things about his company and want to join the team.
If you’re in the Richmond or Lexington area, Watsons Heating & Air is a great choice for HVAC services. You can visit their website to book appointments or get a free estimate. Tyler is proud of his company and the way he runs it.
