Taylor English Unpacked: Building Success with Tailored Design + Build

Taylor English started Taylor Design + Build in 2016. He wanted to get into residential building after working for bigger companies. At first, he did most of the work himself with just a few helpers.

When COVID hit, things got tough for his business. After the pandemic, he changed the company name to Taylor Design + Build. This helped make the business seem bigger and more professional.

Taylor learned that running a big crew was not always smooth. He tried having up to ten employees but found it hard to manage. Now, he keeps his team small with just three or four people.

“The riches are in the niches—focus on what you do best and let professionals handle the rest.” ~ Taylor English

To keep his staff busy all year, Taylor started a new company called Decked by Tailored. This company only builds decks. The deck business is now the main focus and is growing fast.

Taylor hired people to help with marketing and accounting. He says it is important to let professionals handle things you are not good at. This lets him focus on what he loves most—building and being in the field.

His education in construction management helped, but he learned more from real experience. He says you can learn a lot by making mistakes. Taylor believes you should hire an accountant right away when starting a business.

Taylor’s marketing is strong on Instagram and Facebook. He likes to show off his work online. He says having a good website and social media is important for getting new customers.

He enjoys the deck building business because it is more fun and less stressful. Big house renovations can be hard and full of surprises. Taylor wants to keep doing what makes him happy.

Taylor wants to spend most of his time building and less time in the office. He believes in hiring professionals for things like marketing and accounting. This helps him grow the business without getting burned out.

He is proud of the quality of his work. Taylor says you should always try to do your best. He likes to show off his projects and get feedback from customers.

Taylor’s advice is to focus on what you do best. He says the “riches are in the niches.” By specializing, you can grow your business and be happier at work.

He is booked out for deck projects until mid-July. Taylor still does some bigger jobs like additions. He manages those projects but lets his team handle the carpentry.

Taylor is open to talking to other builders. He likes to share his story and help others learn from his experience. His main goal is to keep his business simple and fun.
